The EKT AG , formerly power station in the canton of Thurgau , is a cantonal power company headquartered in Arbon TG . The company has been ensuring the basic supply of electrical energy in the canton of Thurgau since 1912 . EKT AG is owned by EKT Holding AG, which in turn is owned by the Canton of Thurgau. The share capital is represented by the government council.

history

In 1905, the "Electrical Power Supply Bodensee-Thurtal" (KBT) was founded with headquarters in Arbon . The purpose of the KBT was to supply around 40 communities on the southern shore of Lake Constance and in the Thur Valley from Bischofszell to Frauenfeld with “electrical power”. Because the KBT facilities stretched across the cantons of Thurgau, St. Gallen and Appenzell Ausserrhoden, the establishment of an intercantonal company was unsuccessful. In 1911 the canton of Thurgau decided to found its own cantonal company.

On January 1, 1912, the power station of the canton of Thurgau was founded as an independent institution under public law. By means of a referendum, all KBT plant components and energy supply contracts in Thurgau were previously acquired. The place of business was left in Arbon.

In October 2001 the conversion into an independent stock corporation followed . In August 2005 the company name was shortened to EKT AG and in September the company was newly incorporated into a holding structure as a subsidiary of EKT Holding AG .

In 2008, EKT Holding lost 28 million Swiss francs when the Lehman Brothers collapsed . Almost a third of EKT's assets were lost in the process.

Hebbag AG was founded in Bichelsee-Balterswil on June 8, 2009. It produces heat and electricity from the recycling of waste wood. At the end of 2009, a photovoltaic system was generating electricity on an EKT substation. Four more followed by the end of 2010. In 2010, EKT launched the electricity efficiency funding program “Clever Stromspar” for private households, SMEs and municipalities.

In 2011, EKT and the energy supply companies offered a new “Thurgau natural power”. In March, the disaster at the Fukushima nuclear power plants shocked the whole world. The Federal Council and Parliament then decided to phase out nuclear power. Hebbag took over the existing district heating network from the municipality of Bichelsee-Balterswil and has now also supplied district heating for industrial, commercial and private properties.

Swiss East Power AG was founded on March 20, 2013. It was intended to serve as a vessel through which interested energy providers or political organizations could have participated in technologies and production facilities for renewable energies. It turned out, however, that this vessel is not needed because investors want to participate directly in energy generation plants. The operational business of Swiss East Power AG was therefore discontinued on September 30, 2015. As of October 1, 2013, EKT outsourced the measurement services sector to SWiBi AG. Heat Aadorf AG was founded on November 6, 2015. The wood energy plant supplies around 40 properties in Aadorf with environmentally friendly district heating.

In 2017 Hebbag AG was integrated into EKT AG.
