from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Elenchos is a specialist journal in the field of classical studies . It bears the subtitle Rivista di studi sul pensiero antico and publishes articles on the ancient history of ideas.

Elenchos is published by the Istituto per il Lessico Intellettuale Europeo e Storia delle idee of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche in Rome. The personal editor is Anna Maria Ioppolo, who holds the chair for the history of ancient philosophy at the Roman University of La Sapienza . The magazine has been distributed by the Bibliopolis publishing house in Naples since it was founded . It appears with two fascicles per year and contains articles as well as reviews . At first the contributions were only in Italian; today a considerable part is written in other languages.

Founded elenchos 1980 by Gabriele Giannantoni . At that time it was the only magazine published in Italy that was specifically devoted to the history of ancient philosophy. As Giannantoni explained in the foreword to the first fascicle, it set itself the goal of promoting interdisciplinary research and, in particular, of providing a forum for the exchange of ideas between historians of philosophy and philologists. Giannantoni directed Elenchos until his death in December 1998; the following year Anna Maria Ioppolo took over his position.
