As elicitors (also: inducers or mediators ) are described in Plant Physiology refers to substances that defenses against herbivores and pathogens initiate ( induce ).

An example of a defense reaction is the synthesis of phytoalexins .

Elicitors can be either endogenous or exogenous in origin. Endogenous elicitors serve as a signal between the cells (i.e. as a hormone ); Exogenous elicitors are substances that are secreted by other organisms and recognized by the plant.

  • The following substances, for example, serve as exogenous elicitors:
