from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As part of the international racing week Gelsentrab International '71 , the elite race was the highlight on the final Sunday, as every year. The elite race was held for the 25th time this year.

prehistory

After the first two well-attended racing days on the previous Sunday (Grand Prix of the City of Gelsenkirchen) and on Thursday (West German Youth Prize), a large crowd of spectators again drew to the Gelsenkirchen trotting track on the final day .

“Gelsenkirchen has never been so full.” Read the results of the Deutsche Traberzeitung afterwards.

The reason for this was the appearance of the French trotting mare Une de Mai , who was the most successful trotting horse of all time at the time. She started with the French driver Jean-René Gourgeon with a total prize money (all prizes won) of the equivalent of 4,263,544 DM. After her second success in the 'International Trot' (first in 1969) at the Roosevelt Racecourse in New York, which was unofficially considered the World Championship, she has now been referred to in the press as the ' Championesse du Monde '. Her record time was 1: 15.1 (1 min 15.1 seconds calculated on the kilometer) with a race distance of 1,609 meters.

Race course

Une de Mai was the big favorite in the elite race. The chestnut mare was finally sent into the race at the totalizator with a victory rate of 11:10 (today 1.1 for 1). After the cancellation (non-start nomination) of the Italian guest Verdict , only 6 horses started. The total endowment for the race was 120,000 DM. Une de Mai received an allowance of 25 meters. Her biggest competitors were now the two horses from the Kurier stable (Gelsenkirchen). Wallburg and Denar were traded with an eventual victory rate of 48:10 (48 marks for 10 marks) in the race.

The 25th elite race was started on September 19, 1971 as the 6th race at 16:28. After the start, Vico , with Helmut Beckemeyer in the sulky, first took the lead in front of Wallburg . They were followed by Un Cœur B , Ballon Rouge , Denar with driver Willy Roth, and Une de Mai . The latter had found connection to the field after about 600 meters. On the first opposite side, Ballon Rouge made a mistake (galloped) and fell back. After one lap, Wallburg and Johannes ( Hänschen ) Frömming took the lead. At this point, Jean-René Gourgeon was fighting his way closer to the leading horses and was second on the last opposing side. In the final arch, Wallburg continued in front of Une de Mai and Denar . On reaching the home straight, Une de Mai immediately pulled into the front and showed her class. Une de Mai won easily with 2 lengths ahead of Wallburg and Denar . Fourth horse was Un Coeur B . Une de Mai won in a kilometer time of 1 minute. 19.6 sec. over the race distance of 2,525 meters.

The distribution of values was 50,000 - 25,000 - 12,500 - 7,500 - 5,000 DM, as well as 5,000 - 3,000 - 2,000 DM for the top three nationals who passed the finish no later than 5 seconds after the winner. Furthermore, a special bonus of 10,000 DM was announced if the winner would reach the goal in an average time of 1: 17.0 or better.
