De Gerlien van Tiem is a shipyard founded in 1967 in Druten on the Waal in the Netherlands . It began with the repair of barges , has also been producing ship technology since 1985 and has also been manufacturing new ships for inland shipping since 1995 .
Location and facilities
In 1967, company founder Frans van Tiem chose a site in Beneden-Leeuwen - a district of the municipality of West Maas en Waal in the province of Gelderland - as the location for the shipyard, which initially focused on the maintenance and repair of barges. The family business stayed in Beneden-Leeuwen for the next 15 years and moved to its current location in Druten in 1993. There the company built its own port and a production hall for the manufacture of ship technology, which had already started in Beneden-Leeuwen.
The shipyard's equipment includes a dry dock that can accommodate ships with a length of up to 110 meters and a weight of 1150 tons. The dry dock is complemented by three stave docks to lift the bow or stern section of a ship out of the water. They are 28 to 35 meters long and have a lifting capacity of 350, 750 and 1100 tons. There are two gantry cranes on the dry dock and seven more tower cranes on the shipyard site . There are also two work pontoons , a berth for ships with a length of up to 154 meters and two production halls .
Start as a repair and conversion yard
At the beginning, the shipyard initially offered maintenance, repair and maintenance work. They can range from simple damage repairs to complete ship overhauls. The shipyard has expanded its range of services by offering all kinds of conversion work. For example, single-hull tankers are converted to dry cargo ships , oil tankers to acid tankers and passenger ships are extensively modernized.
Shipyard as a ship technology manufacturer
The shipyard had already developed its own bow thrusters in Beneden-Leeuwen , which it offered on the market from 1985 in addition to the shipyard services. Today there are models for coasters and inland vessels that range from small 60 hp engines to 1000 hp units and in sizes of 400, 580, 680, 850, 1000, 1200 and 1400 millimeters with a steering radius of 360 degrees. The shipyard produces the bow thrusters in its own production hall and offers installation and shipping of the rudders. According to De Gerlien van Tiem, between 1985 and 2020 he sold around 1200 bow thrusters. The manufacturer also offers square anchor posts that it has developed itself .
Business field new buildings
As an extension of ship conversions, De Gerlien van Tiem has also been offering new builds of dry cargo ships, tankers, dredgers , push boats and passenger ships for river cruises and day trips since 1995 . The shipyard is designed for new builds of ships up to 135 meters in length; customers include individual clients as well as shipping companies .
The shipyard obtains the hull insurance from subcontractors for the newly built cargo ships : Many of the hulls come from China , others come from Romanian shipyards and only a few from Western Europe. The passenger ships are largely produced on site; here, too, the shipyard involves external shipyards if necessary, as was the case with the day trip ship Maria Sibylla Merian in 2011 . In Druten, De Gerlien van Tiem produced the aft part of the ship, including the engine, while the bow section was supplied by the Helldörfer shipyard in Arnhem . Motors are purchased at the client's request and obtained from different manufacturers.
