The Primus-Linie ("Primus-Linie - Frankfurter Personenschiffahrt Anton Nauheimer GmbH") is an inland shipping company founded in 1974 and based in Frankfurt am Main , which offers excursions on the Main , Rhine and Neckar with its passenger ships .

prehistory

The founder of the shipping company, Anton Nauheimer (* 1946 in Wiesbaden), comes from a family that had been shipping on the Main since 1880 when Peter Nauheimer bought his first ship, the paddle steamer Frankfurt . At first the family operated ferries, after which they were replaced by the railroad, they switched to excursion traffic. From around the 1920s to 1959, she joined forces with the Flettner family to form the "Flettner-Nauheimer" shipping association. After the joint ship Rheingold was burned in a shipyard in 1959 , the three Nauheimers and the three sons of the Flettner family sold their ships to the Cologne-Düsseldorf Deutsche Rheinschiffahrt (KD).

Subsequently, Adolf Nauheimer operated with the Wikinger until 1981 and his cousin, Hans Nauheimer with the Vaterland until 1991, of their own in Frankfurt. In 1974 Anton Nauheimer started their own business with the Primus and in 1976 Adolf-Ulfrid Nauheimer with the ship Wikinger 2 .

founding

Independent of his father's shipping business, Anton Nauheimer intended to implement new ideas in his own shipping company. The new concept was later referred to as gourmet gastronomy and represented a departure from the previously rather rustic hospitality. Such attempts to come close to customer wishes and current tastes shaped the marketing of his company. With this claim, the then 28-year-old founded the Primus line in 1974. The shipping company was based on the Mainkai directly on the Eiserner Steg - at the same address as the shipping company of Adolf Nauheimer and that of Johann Nauheimer before.

deals

The basis of the excursion shipping of the Primus-Linie is formed on the one hand by regular services in the form of small and large round trips in Frankfurt as well as day trips up the Main to Seligenstadt or Aschaffenburg , up the Neckar to Heidelberg or via Mainz to the Upper Middle Rhine Valley . There are also trips to individual events such as the large fireworks display on the Rhine in Flames and a wide variety of event trips: The shipping company's own offers make up the “crime thriller”, trips to the “ Frankfurt city bells ”, architecture trips to the route of industrial culture Rhein-Main Frankfurt am Main , Christmas trips, after-work offers and other, constantly changing program trips.

Development of the fleet

In 1973, he had already ordered the ship from the Schmidt shipyard in Oberkassel a year before it was founded . This ship, the Primus , also gave the shipping company its name. The business developed continuously, so that the second new building was ordered from the Schmidt shipyard. The Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was put into service in 1983. In 1991 the Lux shipyard in Niederkassel / Mondorf was rebuilt with the Nautilus . These three ships, together with the two ships of the Viking Line, shaped the banks of the Eiserner Steg for a long time. When Adolf-Ulfried Nauheimer wanted to retire in 1998 and there was no successor in the family, he sold his two ships Wikinger and Wappen von Frankfurt in July of that year to his great cousin Anton Nauheimer and the Primus-Linie. Since then, the “White Fleet” of the Primus line has consisted of five ships. From around this point on, the Primus-Linie was the sole provider of boat trips in and from Frankfurt. Although there was officially a ship and a landing stage for the Cologne-Düsseldorf Rhine Shipping in Frankfurt, the KD did not use them. Only when the city of Frankfurt threatened to take the mooring away from it did the KD start offering trips in Frankfurt again.

As a step to modernize the fleet and at the same time to expand capacity, the shipping company ordered in 2012 from the Dutch shipyard De Gerlien van Tiem from Druten in the Netherlands . Maria Sibylla Merian took over. The shipping company sold the oldest ship in the fleet, the Primus , to Budapest / Hungary in 2013 .

The shipping company in numbers

With its five ships, the Primus Line covers around 35,000 kilometers a year on the rivers and carries around 250,000 passengers. The shipping company has 40 permanent employees, and around 40 more people are added during the season. The figure for sales from 2015 is around five million euros. A few years earlier, on April 1, 2012, the shipowner's daughter, Marie Nauheimer, joined the management team.
