history

The shipyard was founded shortly after the end of the Second World War in May 1945 by the shipbuilder Johann Lux († 1984). Lux had worked for the United Aluminum Works during the war and acquired knowledge of electric welding technology. Before that, he had completed training at the H. Bröhl shipyard in Mondorf.

The first boat that was completed in the Lux shipyard was a vehicle for the fishing brotherhood in Bergheim . A steel ferry followed for operation on the Sieg . In addition to larger ships, Lux also manufactured dinghies for inland shipping, known as Lux-boats. More than 5000 copies of this model have already been made.

The smaller vehicles that were built at the Lux shipyard, however, have no construction numbers. The No. 1 was only awarded in 1948, for a 15.80 meter long provision and tug boat that was used in the Netherlands . By 2013, over 200 construction numbers had been assigned.

Shipyard facilities

In the post-war period a shipbuilding hall was built on Hummerich 10. It had no direct access to the Rhine , but the ships had to be transported on trailers or slip cars through Hummrichgasse. The last larger vehicle that was built in this hall was the almost 29 meter long city of Beuel .

In 1963/64 a new hall was built. It was located directly on the Rhine, in Moselstrasse. The Willi Ostermann (hull number 18) was the first large watercraft that was built in this hall. 20 years later, in 1984, another larger hall was built and in 2010 Lux took over the neighboring Lülsdorf shipyard in order to expand the hall capacity again. As the most recent expansion, a new shipbuilding hall of 94 m length was built in 2012.

The company is still family-owned and now operates as Lux-Werft und Schifffahrt GmbH .

Boat rental and passenger shipping

In addition to boat and shipbuilding, another line of business was established in 1948, boat rental. Johann Lux signed the first contract, who in addition to unsinkable rowing boats made of steel, also produced paddle boats, pedal boats and sailing boats made of this material, in 1948 with the Ruhrverband through a rental company at Harkortsee . In 1949 another boat rental followed at the Hengsteysee . In 1957, Lux also took over passenger shipping on the two lakes and in 1967 the Biggesee passenger shipping , which later expanded to include the Möhnetalsperre , Sorpealsperre , Hennetalsperre and the Brombachsee . In 2006 the ferry service between Mondorf and Graurheindorf was added. In July 2014 the shipyard acquired the two Rhine ferries Konrad Adenauer and St. Christophorus II and took over the ferry operation of the Bad Godesberg – Niederdollendorf high-speed car ferry from the cities of Bonn and Königswinter.

Funding

In 2015, the shipyard was funded by the federal government with an amount of 578,364 euros as part of the funding guideline “Innovative shipbuilding secures competitive jobs”; the innovation funding is designed as a non-repayable grant.
