Ellerton Priory was a priory of Cistercian near Richmond ( North Yorkshire ) in the UK . The ruined monastery is classified as a Grade II cultural monument .

history

Ellerton was a priory dedicated to St. Mary, believed to have been founded by the Lords of Ellerton around 1200. The priory was probably never occupied by more than 13 nuns; only five conventual women are attested for the year 1381. The priory was the target of Scottish raids several times in the 14th century. An attack in 1347 was particularly difficult. On August 18, 1536, the priory was transferred to the British Crown and formally abolished in the following year.

The building and site of the priory, on which a mansion developed, changed hands several times in the following centuries. Except for the church ruins, all the convent buildings have disappeared. The cloister, which was south of the church, was 20 by 25 meters after excavations. The church ruin itself was prepared as a romantic medieval ruin for the view from the manor house in the 19th century.

useful information

The ruins of Ellerton Priory are now on the manor estate of Ellerton Abbey , which was built in 1830. This facility had been selected several times by the BBC as the location for the filming of the television series " The Doctor and the Dear Cattle " as the residence of the character of Mrs. Pumphrey.
