Ellisland

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ellisland is a villa in the Scottish city of Glasgow . In 1970 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. The villa is not to be confused with Ellisland Farm in Dumfries and Galloway .

description

The villa was built for William Johnston in 1871 . The brothers Alexander and George Thomson are responsible for the planning .

Ellisland is on Nithsdale Road in the southern Pollokshields district of Glasgow . The elongated villa is designed in the distinctive Thomsonian Egyptian-Greek style, which, however, is atypical for this creative phase in Thomson's life. The one-story building is symmetrical. Its masonry consists of hewn stone blocks. Egyptian columns flank the central low-lying entrance portal. Pilasters adorn the flanking windows. The final slate roof is only slightly inclined. The chimney closures are made as lotus flowers. There are design parallels to Thomson's nearby Castlehill villa .
