Elphel is an open hardware , open operating source code camera manufactured by Elphel Inc. primarily for scientific applications. Due to the open hardware and software, the camera can be easily adapted to many different applications. Elphel Inc. was founded in 2001 by the Russian physicist Andrey Filippov , who emigrated to the USA in 1995 .

Applications

Elphels are used to take pictures for Google Street View and for the Google Books project. NASA also uses Elphel cameras for the UAV Global Hawk . The camera was also used by the Apertus project. Apertus is a project by enthusiasts and filmmakers interested in a digital cinema solution.
