history

The Bombay Native Education Society founded an English language school for the local population in 1824, although public opinion in England was against education for the local population at the time. In 1827 the Education Association decided to set up an institute called Elphinstone College , named after Mountstuart Elphinstone , the outgoing Governor of Bombay , who had been very committed to educating the local population. The money for this was raised through a public collection. The college was formally established in 1835 and teaching began in 1836 with initially only two professors . Elphinstone College has existed as an independent organization since April 1856. Since 1860 it has been affiliated with the University of Bombay .

Courses and degrees

The college is divided into the senior college and the junior college . The former is a university institute and leads up to the bachelor's examination, the latter is a higher school, which roughly corresponds to a German grammar school.

  • The senior college offers bachelor's degrees in pure science, information technology, biotechnology, ancient Indian culture, economics, English, German, French, Hindi, Marathi, geography, history, math, statistics and sociology, and hotel and tourism management.
  • The Junior College offers courses in philosophy, commerce and science, as well as courses in computer science and electronics.
