Emacspeak is an extension for GNU Emacs , which adds a full screen reader to the program . Emacspeak has been developed since 1995 by TV Raman , a computer scientist with a doctorate who has been blind since childhood.
Emacspeak is mainly written in Emacs Lisp and every version since release 49.0 has a dog name that can be traced back to guide dogs .
Due to the wide range of functions of Emacs, Emacsspeak enables blind people to do much more than just edit text.
Differences between Emacspeak and normal screen readers
Since Emacsspeak only integrates seamlessly into one program (Emacs itself), it is questionable whether one can speak of a screen reader here, since it only outputs the content of Emacs itself. Classic screen readers, on the other hand, read the content of the entire screen, which depending on the software, can sometimes work well or sometimes badly. With Emacsspeak, however, Emacs is optimized to work without any problems. Due to the variety of functions that Emacs offers (e-mail program, web browser ...), Emacsspeak is definitely competitive compared to other screen readers.
