Emanuel Tov

Emanuel Tov (born September 15, 1941 in Amsterdam ) is an Israeli biblical scholar and has been a professor at the Biblical Institute of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem since 1986 . He is a globally recognized expert on questions of textual criticism . Tov was accepted into the editorial team for the publication of the Dead Sea Scrolls in 1984, and in 1990 he succeeded John Strugnell as the editor in charge.

Life

After Tov immigrated to Israel in 1961, he studied at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He received a BA in Biblical and Greek Literature in 1964 and an MA in Biblical Studies. His teachers included Shemaryahu Talmon and Yehezkel Kutscher. Between 1967 and 1969 he studied at the Department of Near Eastern Languages ​​and Literatures at Harvard , where he also began to deal more closely with the Dead Sea Scrolls. The acquaintance of Frank M. Cross and John Strugnell also resulted from his time at Harvard.

Eventually, Tov received a Ph.D. at the Hebrew University for his work on the Septuagint version of the Book of Jeremiah .

Between 1982 and 1988 Tov taught at Oxford with a focus on the Septuagint. Fellowships in the Netherlands and the USA followed. In 1990 Tov received the J. L. Magnes Chair in Biblical Studies. Also in 1990 Tov became editor-in-chief in the project to publish the finds from the Dead Sea, the Discoveries in the Judaean Desert . Under his leadership, the publications were completed with the publication of the last volume in 2003 - more than 50 years after the first discoveries.

In 2017 he was elected as a foreign member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
