Emmanuel Giroux

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Emmanuel Giroux (born before 1991) is a French mathematician who studies contact geometry , symplectic geometry and topology. He is a professor at the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon .

life and work

Giroux received his doctorate in 1991 from the École normal supérieure in Paris under François Laudenbach . His dissertation contained important advances in contact topology (introduction of convex surfaces, transverse to a flow that preserves the contact structures). He is Research Director of the CNRS and Professor at the ENS in Lyon.

In 2002 he proved a fundamental theorem, which established an assignment of contact structures to three-dimensional compact manifolds (except for isotopic ) and open book decompositions of manifolds. The theorem was perceived as a breakthrough in the theory of contact structures and 3-manifolds.

In 2002 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Beijing.

He has been blind since he was eleven.
