Hansjörg Geiges (born June 6, 1966 in Basel ) is a German-Swiss mathematician who deals with contact geometry , symplectic geometry and topology.

Life

Hansjörg Geiges was born as the son of the photographer Leif Geiges . He won the national mathematics competition in 1985 and studied mathematics with a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation in Göttingen (preliminary diploma 1987), Cambridge (Peterhouse College 1987/88, BA 1988), the University of Zurich (1988/89) and Bonn (after receiving initially studied physics in the basic course). He returned to Cambridge in 1989, where he received his doctorate from Charles B. Thomas in 1992 (On the Existence of Symplectic and Contact Structures on Closed Manifolds), where he won first prize in the Smith / Rayleigh / Knight Prize in 1991. As a post-doctoral student he was Szegő Assistant Professor at Stanford University from 1992 to 1994 , one year at Queens' College at Cambridge University and from 1995 assistant professor at ETH Zurich. In 1998 he became a professor at the University of Leiden and since 2002 he has been a professor at the University of Cologne .

He is co-editor of the annual reports of the German Mathematicians Association , the Archives for Mathematics and the mathematical semester reports .

He has German and Swiss citizenship .
