Leif Geiges (born September 9, 1915 in Freiburg im Breisgau ; † April 5, 1990 in Staufen im Breisgau ) was a German photographer and reporter .

Life

Leif Geiges came from the Freiburg artist family Geiges as the son of Fritz Geiges and Ruth Geiges (née Kinberg). His grandfather was the mosaic and glass artist Fritz Geiges . The mathematician Hansjörg Geiges is his youngest son. The journalist Adrian Geiges is also a son of Geiges.

Act

Geiges attended the art academy in Berlin and studied a. a. Advertising psychology . From the 1930s he worked a. a. as a photographer and reporter for the Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung , for which he also traveled abroad (e.g. to Great Britain ). During the Second World War he was a "photo reporter" in a propaganda company of the Wehrmacht . During this time he was responsible for reports from the “liberated” Alsace , for example , but also for reports from other areas occupied by Germany. In 1939 he documented with the camera the resettlement of Baltic Germans from Riga to the German Reich, which had been declared as a "home fetch" . In the following war years he was one of the most important employees of the already mentioned, widely read Berliner Illustrirten Zeitung , which had been "Aryanized" after the Ullstein publishing family had been expelled and made into an organ of Nazi propaganda. One of his photographs, signed A Christmas Carol for Dad. Admission from a Berlin military hospital formed the front page of the Christmas Eve issue on December 24, 1942 - at the time of the final fall of the 6th German Army in the Battle of Stalingrad .

After the war, Geiges photographed for over thirty illustrated books, most of which dealt with his closer home. He had particular success in 1971 with the Freiburg band Geliebte alte Stadt .

From 1950 to 1971 Geiges was closely connected to the Freiburg Institute for Frontier Areas of Psychology and Mental Hygiene (IGPP), which deals with the research of parapsychological phenomena, and documented all aspects of the institute's work with photographs. From around the mid-1950s he worked with his partners, the Black Forest director and cameraman Fritz Aly and the photographer Arnold Ernst Fanck . The estate of Leif Geiges has been in the House of History Baden-Württemberg since 1991 .

A path was named after him in Staufen.

Trivia

Leif Geiges photographed and tested the foldable Zaschka skis in the Black Forest , which the Freiburg inventor Engelbert Zaschka developed.
