Herbert Oertel

Herbert Oertel (born December 8, 1944 in Eberhardzell , Baden-Württemberg ) is a German physicist , engineer and university professor specializing in fluid mechanics .

Life

Herbert Oertel studied physics at the University of Freiburg from 1965 to 1971 and received his doctorate in engineering. at the University of Karlsruhe (TH) . After his habilitation in 1979, he was appointed director of the Institute for Theoretical Fluid Mechanics at the German Research and Experimental Institute in Göttingen . In 1989 he received the call to the chair of Hermann Schlichting at the Technical University of Braunschweig and directed the Institute of Fluid Mechanics until 1994. It was followed by the appointed Professor of Fluid Mechanics and professor at the University of Karlsruhe (TH), where he developed the Institute of Fluid Mechanics to when he retired in 2010.

His scientific work includes the sub-areas of fluid mechanics aerodynamics , aerothermodynamics , bio- flow mechanics , gas dynamics , boundary-layer flows, convection flows as well as gas-kinetic and continuum mechanical methods of numerical fluid mechanics and optical flow measurement technology . In the Fluid Mechanics College , more than one hundred doctoral and post-doctoral students were trained together with research institutions and industry. He is the founder of the fluid mechanics textbook series and editor of the standard work on fluid mechanics Ludwig Prandtl - Guide through fluid mechanics .

As a visiting professor he has taught in Beijing, Canberra, New Haven, Sao Paulo and Tokyo.
