Hermann Schlichting (born September 22, 1907 in Balje ; † June 15, 1982 in Göttingen ) was a German fluid mechanic .

Life

Hermann Schlichting studied mathematics, physics and applied mechanics at the universities of Jena , Vienna and Göttingen from 1926 to 1930 . On December 29, 1930, he received his doctorate in Göttingen with Albert Betz with a thesis "On the level slipstream problem" and in the same year passed the state examination for teaching at secondary schools in the subjects of mathematics and physics. The meeting with Ludwig Prandtl had a decisive influence on Schlichting's life. He entered the Kaiser Wilhelm Institutefor flow research in Göttingen and from 1931 to 1935 mainly dealt with problems of flows with friction, but in this first time in Göttingen he also began to deal with wing aerodynamics. In 1935 Schlichting went to the Dornier works in Friedrichshafen. There he planned the new wind tunnel and put it into operation after a short construction period. He gained valuable experience in the field of aircraft aerodynamics. At the age of 30 in 1937 he accepted the call to the TH Braunschweig , where he was appointed full professor in 1938.

After taking up his post in October 1937, Schlichting took care of setting up the Aerodynamic Institute, which was currently under construction, in the Aviation Training Center at Braunschweig-Waggum Airport .

The Tollmien-Schlichting waves that occur during the laminar-turbulent transition are named in his honor.

After reaching the age limit, Schlichting retired on September 30, 1975 at the TU Braunschweig. At the same time he resigned as director of the aerodynamic research institute Göttingen (AVA). Since the appointment process for his successor at the TU Braunschweig was not yet completed, he was asked to continue the official business until his successor took office.

The substitution of his chair for fluid mechanics ended on April 30, 1978. As his successor, Boris Laschka began his service on May 1, 1978 at the Technical University of Braunschweig and at the Institute for Fluid Mechanics.

After his retirement, Schlichting lived in Göttingen. There he worked on and completed the 8th edition of his book "Grenzschicht-Theory" with a lot of energy. He has never lived to see it appear and this is why this edition represents his scientific legacy.

He was a member of the Academic Fliegergruppe Braunschweig .
