Emotional psychology

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The emotion psychology is a branch of general psychology and is engaged in the exploration of emotions and in this connection also with emotions , feelings and moods .

The main questions in emotional psychology are:

  • What are emotions and how do they differ from other, related terms?
  • Where is the origin of emotions and how do they arise?
  • What influence do emotions have on other psychological aspects such as learning and remembering or on behavior shown?

Various theories of emotion try to explain these questions or individual sub-aspects.

History of Emotional Psychology

When psychology developed as a scientific discipline in its own right at the end of the 19th century , the study of emotions initially played a major role, so from around 1870 to 1920, emotional psychology made great strides. Important contributions from this period come, for example, from John B. Watson , William James , Alexius Meinong , Wilhelm Wundt and William McDougall , which are still of great importance today.

In the period from around 1920 to 1970, however, behavioral analytical behaviorism prevailed in psychology , which only deals with observable behavior and rules out processes taking place in a person's head as not scientifically comprehensible. Since emotions contain an observable part, but also a special subjective feeling, there were only isolated contributions in emotional psychology during this time.

After behaviorism lost its pioneering position within psychology again, emotional psychology revived around 1980 and is still an important branch of psychology today.
