Empty legs flight

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An empty legs flight , also called empty legs , is an empty flight with which the capacity of an aircraft is moved to another location for transport logistical reasons . In contrast to this, a ferry flight takes place to transfer the aircraft as an object, for example to a customer, to a new operator or for maintenance or repair.

The flight can be occupied with passengers and cargo, which is not common on a ferry flight. The flight organizer can reduce the costs of the flight, which are incurred anyway, through income from the additional cargo. An empty legs flight carries the risk (with the exception of seasonal transfer flights) that the flight will not take place because the transport capacity is no longer required at the destination. The conditions for an empty legs flight are therefore often more favorable than for a scheduled flight.

Empty legs flights occur regularly when business aircraft are in use . In commercial aircraft, they are rare, as each flight movement is busy as possible. They occur more frequently with charter airlines when the first guests are brought to seasonal destinations or the last guests fly back. For example, many small airports in the Aegean Sea are only served by international airlines from spring to the end of October.
