En prison

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

En Prison is a rule in roulette that enables the player to win back his stake if the ball lands on zero and the stake is placed on an easy chance (low - high, even - odd or black - red).

It is a variant of the La Partage rule. If the ball hits zero, the player has the option of paying out half of his stake with the words “partagez la masse, s'il vous plaît” while the other half is withdrawn. In European casinos where this rule is applied, the player can alternatively choose to place his bet “en prison” (French: in prison). The player's bet is then blocked in his position and the croupier places a marker on it. If the bet is positioned on a winning field in the next round, the player gets his bet back, otherwise he loses it. If the ball lands on zero again, it depends on the rules in the respective casino what happens to the bet. This is then either lost or La Partage or En Prison can be used again.

In most European gambling halls it is common practice to use en prison. In American gambling halls, on the other hand, the stake is usually lost when the ball lands on zero, even when European roulette is played.
