James A. Roosevelt

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

James Alfred Roosevelt (born June 13, 1825 in New York City , † July 15, 1898 ) was an American businessman and banker.

Career

During the Civil War , James was instrumental in organizing civil support for the Union's cause . His efforts on behalf of the United States Sanitary Commission and the Western Sanitary Commission have resulted in increased funding for humanitarian aid, particularly clothing and medical supplies for Union soldiers in the field. His correspondence with colleague James Yeatman, brother Theodore, and a friend of the family, Oliver Matthews, revealed both the growing number of requests for help as the war became increasingly bloody and cruel, and the quick and effective response that James and his family deemed appropriate in response to these requests.

At the age of 20, James joined the family business Roosevelt & Son , at that time the largest importer of flat glass in New York City, and became a business partner of his father, Cornelius . When he finally withdrew from the management in 1865, he handed it over to him and his brother Theodore. Both continued the business until 1876, when they finally converted the company into a banking house. When her father passed away in his summer residence in Oyster Bay in 1871, he left each of them over $ 3 million. In 1878 his brother Theodore died of a gastrointestinal stromal tumor .

Over the years James has held leadership positions in numerous companies: he was vice president of the Chemical National Bank (now JP Morgan Chase & Co. ), president of the Broadway Improvement Company , vice president of the Bank of Savings , board member of the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company , Director of the New York Life Insurance Trust Company , Eagle Fire Company , Greenwich Insurance Company , Central and South American Telegraph Company , etc.

He was also a member of the Metropolitan Museum of Art , the Knickerbocker Club , Century Riding Club , New York Yacht Club , Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club , Hudson River Ice Yacht Club and Somerset Club, and the Boston and Downtown Association of St Nicholas Society . James also served on the Board of Park Commissioners , was director of Roosevelt Hospital, and trustee of the New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children .

He died during a train ride on July 15, 1898 of complications from apoplexy .

James was born in 1825, the second son of Margaret Barnhill (1799–1861) and Cornelius Roosevelt (1794–1871), in New York City. His older brother was Silas. But he also had four younger brothers: Cornelius junior, Robert , Theodore and William, who died at the age of one.

On December 22, 1847 he married Elizabeth Norris Emlen (born January 26, 1825), daughter of Mary Parker Norris and William Fishborne Emlen from Philadelphia ( Pennsylvania ). The couple had four children together:
