Emlen Roosevelt
William Emlen Roosevelt (born April 30, 1857 in New York City - March 15, 1930 ) was an American businessman, banker and philanthropist . In this context, he built railroad, telegraph and cable lines.
Career
Roosevelt was president of the Roosevelt & Son family bank on Wall Street . In addition, he worked in the telecommunications industry. In the 1880s he founded the Mexican Telegraph Company and the Central and South American Telegraph Company . He later was a director of the International Telephone and Telegraph Company . Over the years he has held managerial positions in a variety of other companies. He was secretary and director of the Broadway Improvement Company ; Trustee with Union Trust Company , New York Life and Trust Company , Institution for Savings of Merchants and Clerks ; Director of Chemical National Bank (now JP Morgan Chase & Co. ), Gallatin National Bank , Astor National Bank , National Starch Company , Mix Telegraph Company, and Fidelity & Casualty Company of New York .
He was also a member of the Metropolitan Museum of Art , Century Club , City Club , Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club and other clubs, as well as the Downtown Association and the Sons of the American Revolution . Roosevelt has also served as Trustee and Secretary to Roosevelt Hospital , Trustee to the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary , Trustee and Treasurer to the New York Dispensary, and Treasurer to Essex County Country Club . He served as an officer in the National Guard for 16 years , then resigned in January 1898. At that time he held the rank of major and was quartermaster in the 1st Brigade .
family
On October 4, 1883, Roosevelt married Christine Griffin Kean, daughter of Lucy Halsted and John Kean (born March 27, 1814, † January 17, 1895). Her ancestors include: General Jacob Morris (born December 28, 1755, † January 10, 1844); Lewis Morris (April 8, 1726, † January 22, 1798), one of the signatories of the United States' Declaration of Independence ; John Kean (1756 - May 4, 1795), member of the Continental Congress , and Philip Livingston (July 9, 1686 - December 31, 1749), the second lord of Livingston Manor .
The couple had five children together:

Trivia
He was a co-owner of the Roosevelt Building on the corner of Broadway and 13th Street, which was named after his grandfather Cornelius Roosevelt (born January 30, 1794, † July 17, 1871). Furthermore, it owned the James Alfred Roosevelt Estate in Cove Neck in Nassau County ( New York ).
After the death of his cousin Theodore, he bought the forests around his grave at the Youngs Memorial Cemetery in Oyster Bay (New York) and then donated them to the National Audubon Society , which created a bird sanctuary ( The Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary ) from it.
