Encourados is a place and a former municipality ( Freguesia ) in the northern Portuguese district of Barcelos . The community had 514 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). The city was founded around the church of S. Tiago (St. Jacob). It was first mentioned in 1441 because it was added to the order of S. João Evangelista de Vilar de Friars .

In the course of the regional reform on September 29, 2013 , the municipalities Encourados and Areias de Vilar were merged to form the new municipality União das Freguesias de Areias de Vilar e Encourados .
