from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Engine Alliance is a joint venture founded equally by General Electric and Pratt & Whitney for the development and construction of large and powerful engines.

history

GP7200 engine on an Airbus A380

It was founded in 1996 in order to distribute the enormous development costs for large turbofan engines , which were also subject to new requirements in terms of noise, emissions and economic efficiency, over several shoulders. Originally, a new engine was to be developed for the planned Boeing 747-500 and -600 versions , as an engine with the necessary performance did not yet exist. But Boeing put these plans aside . At the same time, Airbus began planning the A3XX, later the Airbus A380 , and approached Engine Alliance for the purpose of developing a suitable engine. This then became the GP7200 engine.
