English passage
The English Passage ( Romanian : Pasajul Englez ) is a passage in the center of Bucharest , the capital of Romania . The passage is between Calea Victoriei and Strada Academiei .
history
In 1855 the Viennese jeweler Joseph Resch had the Resch house built in the heart of Bucharest. This was converted into a hotel in 1885. The corridor of this English hotel later became an important passageway connecting two large boulevards. The building only retained its function as a hotel for a few years and became a luxury apartment block. The passage was named Pasajul "English" or in Romanian Pasajul Englez , in German English passage .
The English passage today
Today the passage is difficult to find because the entrances are just two meters high. But while the building is a historic monument, it's neglected and the metal balconies are rusty.
The function of the English Passage was taken over in 1920 by the much larger Victoria Passages , which, in contrast to the English Passage, have restaurants on the ground floor.
The passage served u. a. as a backdrop for the horror film Dracula II .
