Enholmen is an island off Slite in the northeast of the largest Swedish island of Gotland .
On Enholmen, the fortress Enholmens fästning has been located on the site of the former 17th century fortress Karlsvärds fästning since the middle of the 19th century . The island used to be used for quarantine . People suspected of having contagious diseases were sent there before they were allowed to enter the main island of Gotland. On the west side of the island is a peninsula with a cholera cemetery ( Swedish kolerakyrkogård ), a mass grave that was created after a cholera epidemic .
Today the island is primarily a military facility, which was a restricted military area ( Swedish military skyddsområde ) until the end of the 1990s . A little further east is the island of Grunnet , which was also part of the restricted area.
