The blue-eared honey eater ( Entomyzon cyanotis ) is a songbird from the honey eater family and the only species in the Entomyzon genus .

The 30 cm long blue-eared honey eater is a large type of honey eater with an olive-green back, black hood, black stripe on the chest, white underside, a white spot on the back of the head and large bald blue areas of skin around the eyes. It has a long tongue with a brush-like tip with which it can fetch nectar from tall calyxes.

Occurrence

The habitat of the blue-eared honeyeater includes northern and eastern Australia as well as southern New Guinea. He lives in light forests and bush landscapes.

The blue-eared honeyeater lives in small, territorial groups. Food includes pollen, berries, nectar and fruits (e.g. bananas, grapes) and insects, which it randomly licks up when licking the nectar. The blue-eared honeyeater is usually very aggressive, especially during the mating season. It often uses abandoned nests of other birds and sometimes even expels gray-crowned centimalia from their nests. Occasionally he builds his own, large, bowl-shaped nests, which he bitterly defends against humans. In the breeding season from June to February, 2 to 3 eggs are incubated by the female alone for 16 days. However, both parent birds and the other birds in the group help with the rearing of the young birds.
