Environment and Climate Change Canada ( ECCC , English ) or, because of the Canadian bilingualism, also Environnement et du Changement climatique Canada ( ECCC , French ) is the national environment ministry of Canada . The agency is headquartered in the capital, Ottawa . The tasks of the authority are environmental protection, species protection, weather and meteorological information.
history
Environment Canada was created on June 11, 1971 through the merger of the previously independent authorities, the Meteorological Service of Canada , founded in 1871, and the Canadian Wildlife Service , founded in 1947. The authority was responsible for atmospheric environmental analyzes, environmental protection, fishing, land, forest and species protection, water protection.
In the 1970s, the weather analysis and information were improved. Several regional locations have been opened for this purpose. In addition, a weather radio system was set up and the Canadian Climate Center opened.
In 1979 responsibility for fisheries was transferred to a newly established agency that now operates as Fisheries and Oceans Canada .
Following the election of Justin Trudeau as Prime Minister in October 2015, the Ministry of the Environment, previously known as Environment Canada , was renamed Environment and Climate Change Canada to express responsibility for climate change .
