According to its own statements, Environmental Conservation is one of the oldest and most cited publications in interdisciplinary environmental research. The magazine was founded in 1974. The editor is Nicholas VC Polunin ( University of Newcastle ). Associate editors are Daniel Brockington (University of Manchester), John Innes (University of British Columbia), Aaron MacNeil (AIMS Australia), Charlie Shackleton (Rhodes University) and Trevor Willis (NIWA, New Zealand)

In addition to specialist articles, comments and reviews from the fields of environmental policy, practice and theory of the social and natural sciences on a global and local level, as well as case studies are published.
The journal's impact factor in 2012 was 2,341. In the statistics of the ISI Web of Knowledge , the journal thus took 70th place out of 209 journals in the environmental sciences category.
