Ephets

The Epheten (Greek "instructor") was a college of judges in ancient Athens . It consisted of 51 members and was headed by the Archon basileus . The ephetians primarily judged homicides unless they were willful. The arbitration award was final. In the 5th century the ephetas were replaced by the people's court .
