Ephraim Chiume

Ephraim Mganda Chiume (* 1953 ) is a Malawian politician who was a minister several times.

Life

Chiume was Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Energy between 2009 and 2011 and was appointed Minister of Justice in his government by President Bingu wa Mutharika in 2011 . As such, he declared in December 2011 that laws on criminal liability for homosexual acts should be repealed in Malawi . In 2012, the government examined whether homosexual acts should be legalized in Malawi.

After President Bingu wa Mutharika died on April 5, 2012, the previous Vice-President Joyce Banda took over the office of President on April 7, 2012. On April 11, 2012, Khumbo Kachali was sworn in as the new Vice President and sworn in on April 13, 2012. On April 26, 2012, President Banda unveiled her cabinet with Chiume becoming the new Foreign Minister and Minister for International Cooperation, Ken Kandodo the new Defense Minister and Uladi Mussa the new Interior Minister, while Ken Lipenga remained Minister of Finance. He held the office of foreign minister until 2014, when he was replaced by George Chaponda .

His cousin was Kanyama Chiume , who was the country's first foreign minister in 1964.
