Ephrem I.

Ephrem ( Russian Ефрем ) was a Russian Orthodox bishop . He was Bishop of Novgorod (1030-1034) and Metropolitan of Kiev (1054/1055 - around 1065).

Little is known about his life. Ephren probably came from the family of the Byzantine emperor.

In 1030 he became Bishop of Novgorod. In 1034 a successor was elected.

In 1054 or 1055 he was appointed Metropolitan of Kiev. That year, Ephrem summoned Bishop Luka Schidjata of Novgorod and had him interned in the cave monastery . After three years he had to release him.

Ephrem possibly rededicated the St. Sophia Cathedral in Kiev .

The year of his death is unknown.

  1. On his seal he is referred to as Protoproedros , an honorary title for members of the imperial family.
  2. He is not considered a full bishop of Novgorod.
  3. Luka had replaced him as Bishop of Novgorod, perhaps that was the reason for his imprisonment.
  4. Ephrem could also have been a bishop of Pereyaslavl , the year of consecration is not known.
