Eprouvette (unit)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eprouvette , the test reel , was a French measure of length. The measure was used for silk yarn. The reason for this was the determination of the denier yarn count . The degree of fineness indicated how many denier the thread length of 9600 Aune weighs. This large strand was not weighed, but adapted to a smaller container.

For this purpose, only a strand of 400 threads was wound onto the sample reel with a circumference of 1 Aune and this sample was then weighed. This 24th portion of the length was the denier weight that was to be determined. As many grains as the sample weighed, the weight of 9600 Paris rods was the same denier.

  • 1 Eprouvette = 400 Aune = 480 meters (previously also 475.38 meters)

There were also exceptions to the metric system:

  • Reel circumference: 1.00 meters or 1.20 meters or 1.25 meters
  • Number of threads: 400 or 480 or 500
