Epsy Campbell Barr (born July 4, 1963 in San José , Costa Rica ) is a Costa Rican politician .

Career

Barr studied economics at the Universidad de Costa Rica and the Universidad Latina de Costa Rica , where she completed her master's degree in 1988 .

Between 2002 and 2006 Barr was a member of parliament for the Partido Acción Ciudadana , in 2003 she took over the parliamentary group and in 2005 the party chairmanship. In 2009 she ran for the presidential candidacy within the party, but was only second in the primaries behind Ottón Solís and resigned as party leader, successor was Elizabeth Fonseca Corrales . In 2013 she ran again, but only took third place. However, she moved back into the Chamber of Deputies in the parliamentary elections the following year. In the presidential election in Costa Rica in 2018 , she ran as Vice President of Carlos Alvarado Quesada , who prevailed in the runoff election. As a result, she resigned her mandate and was sworn in as Foreign Minister on May 8th of that year. In October of that year, a parliamentary committee investigated irregularities in the ministry she headed, in particular in connection with the appointment of her goddaughter as a consultant. In December she finally resigned from her position.
