Eltville earthworks

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The hillside between the Rhine river and the Leimer bei Hattenheim lying Erdwerk of Eltville was discovered in 1959 and first studied. Another investigation was made in April 1992. It is assigned to the younger linear ceramic band (approx. 5000 - 4800 BC).

A ditch was to be made out over a length of approx. 60 m . This was approx. 3.5 m to 4.5 m wide and 1.2 m deep. Its front was deepened again to 2.0 m to 2.6 m. Inside one found foundation trenches, which possibly belonged to long structures . The earthwork was probably a fortification that housed the first farmers in the region. This is probably the oldest fortification in the Taunus .

Monument protection

The area of the ramparts is a ground monument according to the Hessian Monument Protection Act . Investigations and targeted collection of finds are subject to approval, and accidental finds are reported to the monument authorities.
