Eric Walters (born March 3, 1957 in Toronto ) is a Canadian author for children and young people.

life and work

Eric Walters grew up in west Toronto, in a deprived area of the city. His mother died when he was four years old and he and his older sister had to take care of themselves. Walters had a wild youth and many of the children and teenagers he grew up with ended up in prison. He himself was able to escape this life, which he himself felt like immigration to a new country. He studied psychology and then worked as a social worker. In addition to his job, he completed a master's degree in social work as well as a teacher training course, a career aspiration of his youth. Today he lives in Mississauga, Ontario with his wife Anita. He has three children.

His writing began in 1993. His first story “Stand your ground” was the result of an attempt to inspire his reading weary students for literature. The setting is the school (Vista Heights Public School), where he teaches. He lets names of his students and characteristics of the local community Streetsville flow into the story. In the following years, Walters published 70 more stories. His books have been translated into eleven languages, including German.

In addition to teaching and writing, Walters founded a non-profit organization in Kenya. The organization "Creation of Hope" cares for orphans in the Mbooni district. This set up two children's homes and ensures that the orphans can go to school.

Eric Walter's books are often about social justice and problems. In an interview, Walters describes two main themes that run through his stories: "A sense of belonging" - in his opinion people always want to belong somewhere - and the will and the strength to change something in his life. Walters is of the opinion that every person can consciously make decisions in their life in order to overcome misery and hardship and to make something of themselves. The protagonists in Walter's books are teenagers whose lives are changed by a decisive event. His main characters are mostly at the age of 14. In April 2010 he hiked 200 kilometers through the Sahara before he published the book: "Just Deserts". In the summer of 2012 he and his son climbed Mount Everest for his book: "Between Heaven and Earth". He also traveled around Canada and introduced his stories to children.

Eric Walters has received 100 awards, including eleven Childrens Choice Awards. He is the only writer in Canada to have won both the Silver Birch Award and the Red Maple Award three times, in which more than 125,000 students voted for their favorite as an election committee. Both are Canadian children's and youth book awards from the Ontario Library Association, part of a national recreational reading program.
