Erich Wittmann

Erich Christian Wittmann (* 1939 ) is a German math teacher.

Life

From 1959 Wittmann studied mathematics and physics at the University of Erlangen , where he passed his teaching examination in 1964, was a research assistant after the second state examination in 1966 and received his doctorate in 1967 (transferring Fitting's structural analysis to infinite groups). From 1969 he was professor for didactics of mathematics at the Pädagogische Hochschule Ruhr, which merged with the University of Dortmund in 1980 . In 2004 he retired.

In 1998 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Kiel and in 2000 he gave a plenary lecture at the 9th International Congress on Mathematical Education (ICME) in Tokyo.

It deals with fundamental issues in teaching mathematics (applying the teachings of Jean Piaget ), elementary geometry, design of learning environments and teaching mathematics in primary schools. He is the initiator of the Math 2000+ project for mathematics teaching in elementary schools.

In 2013 he received the Johannes Kühnel Prize.
