Graphic representation of the Schleswig-Holstein Rescue Medal

The rescue medal of the state of Schleswig-Holstein was donated on August 4, 1954 by the then state parliament and since then has served as a state award for people who have successfully rescued people from mortal danger at the risk of their own lives. At the same time, the commemorative plaque for rescue from danger and the public commendation were created for less serious rescue acts.

Award requirements

Rescue medal

The Rescue Medal is awarded to all people who have rescued people from mortal danger under particularly difficult circumstances and at risk of their own lives or who have averted a significant threat from the general public and who have shown a special level of courage and willingness to make sacrifices. The rescue medal can only be awarded once to one and the same person. The possession of the rescue medal expressly excludes the award of the commemorative plaque.

Commemorative plaque

On the other hand, the commemorative plaque for rescue from danger is awarded if the rescue act was carried out by the rescuer with less serious risk to life or was unsuccessful despite the willingness to make sacrifices.

Public commendation

The public commendation is given if the rescuer found himself in low risk of his own life during the rescue act and the facts are not sufficient for the award of the commemorative plaque.

In addition to the award of the rescue medal and the public commendation, a cash reward can also be granted if the rescuer sustained property damage during the underlying rescue act, which the rescued person and his relatives cannot compensate.

Disclaimer

The rescue medal and the commemorative badge are generally not awarded to those persons who are entrusted with protecting the lives of other people for official or professional reasons or whose duties are to avert threats to the general public. The award is therefore only considered if these persons have far exceeded their duty to perform the rescue act .

Award authority and award procedure

The prime minister decides on the final award of the rescue medal, the commemorative plaque, the public commendation and the monetary reward on behalf of the state government. With the delivery of the rescue medal and the commemorative plaque, the person to be lent receives a certificate signed by the Prime Minister, whereby the awards become the property of the person lent. After the borrowed person dies, the medal remains with his relatives as a memento.

Appearance, composition and way of wearing the awards

The round, silver-plated rescue medal has a diameter of 33 mm and shows the embossed state coat of arms with the inscription SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN in the center . The rescue medal is worn on an orange 28 mm wide ribbon with a narrow white stripe running through it on both sides on the left side of the chest. It is based on its original pattern, the Prussian Rescue Medal from 1833 .
