1 Eritrean Tallero = 5 Italian Lira

The tallero ( Italian for taler ) was the currency of Italian Eritrea from 1890 to 1921.

The currency was divided into 5 lire of 100 centesimi each. The lira was equivalent to the Italian lira .

The Italian colonial authorities approved the issue of banknotes denominated in lira as early as 1885, the first tallero silver coins were not issued until 1890. The tallero was minted based on the model of the Maria Theresa thaler , which was still widespread and accepted in East Africa at the end of the 19th century. The coin has a diameter of 40.5 mm and a rough weight of 28.125 grams with a fineness of 800 ‰ silver . The Tallero's last mint year was 1918.

In 1921 the tallero was abolished and the Italian lira now circulated on its own until it was replaced by the Italian-East African lira in 1938 .
