Erkki Karu

Erkki Karu , born in Erland Fredrik Kumlander (born April 10, 1887 in Helsinki , † December 8, 1935 there ), was a Finnish film director and producer.

Life

Erkki Karu was a traveling actor before he founded the film production company Suomi-Filmi together with others in 1919 . This became the leading film company in Finland in the 1920s. His 1923 film The Logroller's Bride was the first Finnish film to be distributed internationally. In 1931 Karu made his first sound film, in 1933 he founded the film company Suomen Filmiteollisuus . Most of the time he also wrote the script and edited the version, practically creating his films in personal union.

Karus Film Nuori Luotsi (1928) was the first film in 1972 to be restored by the Finnish Film Institute.

Erkki Karu was married to Elli Kylmänen, with whom he had two children, Olavin (1916-1992) and Sinikan (1917-1994).
