The Erlpeter fountain

The Erlpeter is the name of a historical fountain figure in Pirna, Saxony . It is located on the east wall of the boys' school that was rebuilt in the 16th century.

history

The fountain formerly located in front of the Obertor at the foot of the Schlossberg of Schloss Sonnenstein is mentioned in a document as early as 1384. In a certificate of award from Elector Ernst and Duke Albrecht , the source is mentioned in 1468 as " Erllinpeter located on the city of mawer ". The name is derived from an alder that used to stand at the fountain.

The source of the fountain rises from the sandstone rocks at the foot of the sunstone. As early as the beginning of the 16th century, a forerunner of today's fountain figure appears to have existed in a brick grotto. In 1541 there was a stone tablet next to the well with the inscription: " Deut. III. Beware and don't forget your God who gives you water from the hard rock. George Dinckel ad DMJ 1541. "

In 1549 the well dried up due to economic exploitation and had to be restored at great expense . The old Petermann city chronicle reports that the source of the well was taken through a tunnel . From 1550 the water from the spring was fed to the slaughterhouse, the general pipe network and the building at Am Markt 12. In the latter building, wooden pipes from this old water supply have been preserved. The original fountain figure represented a boy holding a bottle from which the fountain water pours. This figure was destroyed during the occupation of Pirna during the Thirty Years' War by Swedish troops under Field Marshal Johan Banér . There was no replacement. Instead, the fountain was enclosed in a container in 1687 and surrounded by a stone vault.

In 1908 the Pirna Beautification Association donated a replica of the old fountain figure based on historical records. A restoration took place in 2008. On the base of the figure is the inscription " I am called Erlenpeter, poor people well known. Whoever doesn't have money in his pocket drinks with me from my bottle ".

legend

The legend tells of a herder who cured his rash by drinking from the well water and washing himself in it.
