The chapel of Ermida de Nossa Senhora do Monte Santo

The Ermida de Nossa Senhora do Monte Santo is a chapel built in 1931 in Água de Pau , on the Azores island of São Miguel . It is located above the town center on the Pico da Figueira hill. A way of the cross with azulejos leads from the village to the chapel. In the extension of the path there is a lookout point from which you can look down on the district of Caloura by the sea.

History and architecture

The construction of the chapel goes back to an alleged apparition of St. Mary . Two children from Água de Pau reported in 1918 that they had seen the Virgin Mary on the summit of Pico da Figueira. Her parents then decided to build the chapel, which was completed in September 1931.

The building, painted blue and white, consists of three octagonal parts. It is surrounded by a low wall along with a forecourt. Inside, a picture of Senhora do Monte adorns the altar. In 1998, a little behind the chapel on a hill a 7.38 meter high cross was erected.
