Água de Pau is a small Portuguese town ( Vila ) and municipality on the Azores island of São Miguel .

history

The name probably goes back to the first settlers in the 15th century AD, who saw a watercourse ( água = water) flowing from a wetland ( paul = moor) into the sea. The place was raised in 1515 by King D. Manuel I to Vila . It remained the seat of its own circle until the various administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in 1822 . As a result, the Água de Pau district was dissolved in 1853 and has been a municipality of the Lagoa district ever since.

In 1966, the municipality of Ribeira Chã was created by hiving off from the municipality of Água de Pau.
