The old bridgehead in Trittenheim comes from the first Moselle bridge , which was built in 1907/09 and replaced the Ponten ferry between the two ferry towers that had been used until then . On the northern side of the bridgehead, between the local ferry tower and the first bridge pillar, there is a slate-roofed bridge house, which was paid from 1909 to raise a bridge toll to finance the Moselle bridge. Both were extensively restored when the current Moselle bridge was rebuilt around 1992.

A pillar of the old bridge is home to an extremely rare and protected species of bat. The population of this bat colony is regularly checked by Bonn conservationists.

Today the old bridgehead serves as a rest area and viewing platform , and houses the statue of Johannes Trithemius .
