Ernst Schneller Prize

The Ernst Schneller Prize was an award from the Society for Sport and Technology in the German Democratic Republic (GDR), which was founded in 1977. It was awarded for outstanding achievements in the service of socialist military education and for services in the scientific-technical, artistic or journalistic field. The endowment of the prize was 5000 marks for individuals and 3000 marks for collectives. Incidentally, the maximum number of awards was limited to only six prizes a year. Well-known pieces are currently being traded at around € 80.

Appearance and wearing style

The prize included a medal with a diameter of 31.5 mm, which on its obverse shows Ernst Schneller's head, looking to the left from the viewer. This is enclosed in a semicircle by the inscription: ERNST SCHNELLER PRICE . The inscription in the middle under his head portrait: GST . The medal was worn on the upper left side of the chest on a rectangular, blue-covered clasp, in the middle of which a white vertical central stripe was woven, in which a 1 mm wide blue vertical stripe was woven. The hem of the clasp also consisted of a narrow white border on both sides.
