Ernst Kaltenbach (born February 7, 1889 in Basel ; † October 10, 1965 ), known as "Pfumpf", was a Swiss football and national team player.

Kaltenbach played for FC Basel between 1911 and 1927 . During this time, FCB always played in Serie A, in the "central" group. Kaltenbach had a total of 68 missions and scored five goals.

On April 24, 1921, he was the best Basel player in a comparison between a Berlin city selection and FC Basel in front of 35,000 spectators. The Basel team achieved a 3: 3, but had previously traveled 19 hours by train. In the domestic championship, FC Basel almost suffered relegation from Serie A in the same season.

National team

Kaltenbach was one of the pioneers in Swiss football history and played a total of 13 international matches for the Swiss national football team between 1911 and 1922 . In his first international match, on October 29, 1911, there was a 9-0 defeat against Hungary in Budapest . His last international match, eleven years later, was also a comparison with the Hungarians in Budapest, this time there was an honorary entry with a 1-1 draw.

The first success in Swiss football history in the third international match (they had lost the first two to France) was on April 5, 1908 at the Basler Landhof against the national team of the German Empire . Kaltenbach's club and national team colleague Siegfried Pfeiffer , also with a doctorate and at the same time President of FC Basel, scored two goals in the legendary 5-3 victory.

On June 27, 1920 in Zurich in a 4-1 victory over Germany, Kaltenbach was the Swiss captain. That game was the first appearance by a German selection after the First World War.

Private life

Dr. phil Ernst Kaltenbach was a high school teacher in Basel and shaped the early history of FC Basel. In 1916 he was one of the initiators in founding the junior department at FC Basel. From October 29, 1924 he was the editor of the "Schweizerische Fußball- und Athletik-Zeitung", and later wrote about Swiss football for the German magazine "Kicker" and for the sports newspaper "Tip".
