Ernst von Pidde

Ernst von Pidde (* 1877 in Salzdahlum near Wolfenbüttel , † 1966 in Gifhorn ) is the fictional author of Richard Wagner's "Ring des Nibelungen" in the light of German criminal law . The work by an anonymous author belongs to the fields of satire and parody and was first published in 1968.

According to the invented biography, as it is quoted in the book editions, Ernst von Pidde had to give up his dream of a career as a cellist after a hunting accident and studied law. From 1916 to 1933, when he was released by the National Socialists, he worked as a district judge in Gifhorn (Lower Saxony). His declared anti-Wagnerianism is believed to be one of the reasons for his dismissal.

The work is an exact comparison of the plot of all four operas in Richard Wagner's Ring des Nibelungen with the German penal code from 1968. Each individual “criminal offense” is assessed and punished .

The book was written around 1933 and published in 1968 in a revised and updated form from Pidde's alleged estate. It has been published several times since then.

This work served the ORF in 1978 as a template for a film with Susi Nicoletti .

The civil side of the ring was also resolved in 1983.
