The First Foreign Language High School of Varna is a high school in Varna (Bulgaria). According to statistics of all schools in Bulgaria , it is the sixth best high school in the country.

history

The high school was founded in 1964. At the request of parents and the education department, a specialized school for the foreign languages ​​German and English was set up. The Council of Ministers approved the implementation of the project. Initially there were classes in German , English and Russian in classes of 20 students each. Russian was compulsory for students learning English or German . Admission to the grammar school required an entrance examination in mathematics and literature . 98% of the first high school graduates were accepted into colleges and universities outside Bulgaria .

Until 1972 the grammar school was located in the building of the Jungfrauenschule. In 1972 it finally moved to the building, which is still occupied today, near a war memorial. Since then, 4 classes in the English and 4 classes in the German direction have been accepted annually. Russian as the first foreign language of choice was dropped.

The duration of training in the foreign language high school is 5 years. To be accepted and taught, every student must pass an exam in Bulgarian , Mathematics and Literature . 50% of the places are given to girls, 50% to boys. 88 students are accepted, who are assigned to 4 classes of 22 students each of the respective foreign language. Students strive for some diplomas that are internationally recognized and respected. With them, almost every graduate abroad is accepted into universities. The students who learn German can take the German language diploma level 2 through so-called performance classes. During the 5-day week that is common there, German is taught in these classes at least 8 hours per week. With this diploma, all students have the opportunity to study and work in German-speaking countries.

General

59 teachers from Bulgaria and 4 foreign teachers from the USA and Germany work at the First Foreign Language High School in Varna. The school is attended by around 820 young people between the ages of 14 and 19.

Internationally, Bulgaria and thus the grammar school are participating in various exchange projects. The foreign language high school maintains contacts with the Comenius project, in which Spain , Poland , Germany and Austria also participate. The foreign language high school also participates in various internal projects with partner schools. Every year there is an exchange between the high school in Varna and the BG / BRG Klosterneuburg , which is a higher education institution in Austria. This exchange has a long tradition between the two countries. Furthermore, there has been an exchange with the Herbartgymnasium in Oldenburg / Germany for several years .

There are three IT rooms, a sports field, a large gym and a large auditorium where various events such as concerts take place on a regular basis. The school extends over 4 floors, in which there are many small classrooms. The high school also has a music room, which is equipped with a piano. There is also a red salon in which films are viewed and shown. For individual subjects there are special classrooms and collections such as the chemistry, physics or biology hall. With the literature room, another new room has recently been created. During the breaks, the students can buy drinks and food in the canteen in the basement. The breaks last between ten and twenty minutes.
