Schlueter is a family name .

Origin and meaning

The Schlueter family name is one of the names that are closely linked to the social status of the person who first took it. Rooted in the Middle Low German language, the name Schlüter was formed from the word "sluter = locker" and denotes the office of building and treasury manager. With the emergence of family names in the Middle Ages, the citizens of a place were often named after their professional activities. The first bearer of the name Schlüter therefore had the task of administering public buildings, castles and cellars as well as their treasures. In other cases there was also a connection between the name and the occupation of the city gatekeeper and prison guard, the so-called "turnkey".

The name Schlueter ranks 198th among the most common German family names. It occurs particularly frequently in Westphalia and northern Germany . In addition Schlüter variants exist as Slüter , Schlütter , Schlüer , Schlieter or closers . The Latinized equivalent is Claviger .
